One of the most infamous questions of history is Pontius Pilate’s query to Jesus: “What is truth?”
A more recent government leader, then President of the United States William Clinton, conveys a similar concept in his statement: “That depends on what the meaning of ‘is’ is.”
The expressed desire of the Apostle Paul for the called out ones of Corinth was that they should not be ignorant of the schemes of satan, the deceiver. Sadly as we look about us we see many loved ones operating in abysmal ignorance.
Pause for a moment and reflect on the significance of words, language, our tool for the communication of concepts and reasoning. On a practical level we primarily think in words. Some of us are very precise in our use of words and often therefore we become very clear in our thinking. Others are very loose in our use of words and often we then become easily confused in our thinking.
Language can unite and empower us. Confusing our language can divide and disrupt our creativity. According to the history of mankind, a common language empowered us to accomplish whatever we imagined. But, the confusing of our languages on the plains of Shinar, stopped the building of the Tower of Babel and resulted in our being dispersed across the face of the Earth.
One of the great and ongoing schemes of satan has been his attack on our language and thus on our thinking. Jesus gave us an insight about our source of freedom. It came in knowing the Truth. And knowing the Truth is the result of continually walking in relationship with Him the Word. As we look back at history we see the ongoing development of satan’s scheme. We see the movement from understanding, as John did, the Word is the person of Jesus, to a very different understanding of the Word as being the canonized Bible. We see the movement from understanding, as John did, Truth is the person of Jesus, to a very different understanding of Truth as being a set of verifiable facts. Thus now truth could be manipulated by the reason and logic of man.
During the late 1800’s and early 1900’s satan further developed his scheme. He convinced learned educated men and through them the intellectual leaders of institutional churchianity the Bible is not inspired by God it is merely a compilation of stories and myths. Some might be true some false. The principals contained in it, some might be true some false. Thus, all moorings to a set of fixed objective realities were lost and we were all released to be blown about by every wind of doctrine.
Our current social situation is merely the logical outcome of satan’s grand scheme. In our news media, in our entertainment media, in our religious services: What is truth ? It is what ever one needs to say to sway you in the direction we want you to go. What do words mean ? They mean whatever we want them to mean to support our truth. So we watch: as love becomes sex; as violence becomes protest; religious manipulation becomes freedom; and, as the loving God of the universe becomes a self-centered monster to whom we attribute all manner of evil.
Once upon a time followers of Jesus were quite clear. Who is Truth ? Jesus ! Who is the Word of God ? Jesus !
It is time for us to stop being seduced by Facebook, political leaders, and religious leaders. Turn away from all these schemes and enter into an intimate relationship with Jesus. As we continue in relationship with the Word, we will come to know Him who is the Truth and the Truth will set us free. It was after all, for Freedom that the Anointed One has set us free.
