Happy Valentine’s Day

The very concept of Valentine’s Day seems silly on so many levels.  It is a holiday primarily promoted by the industries producing flowers, cards, candies, and jewelry.  It purports to be a celebration of love, romance or lust.  It leaves some of the people who receive gifts  feeling compelled to reciprocate like  a low level form of prostitution. And it leaves those who do not receive feeling rejected and depressed.

If love is unconditional; if love never fails; if love is our expression of the character of God; what is the logic of a holiday to celebrate our everyday way of life ?

Of course, I strongly favor husbands expressing love, romance, and desire for their wives.  And I favor wives making similar expressions toward their husbands.  But my hope is that each of you will make such expressions each and every day and not wait for a commercial holiday to share God’s infinite love.

His, thus Yours,
  Stuart

  1. I was shopping for a card last year and a fellow a few feet away from me sighed, somewhat in disgust, and said, “just another dang thing I hafta do…”. He looked at me as though I might agree with his revulsion. I smiled and said, “for me it’s way cool, cuz I don’t have to, I get to. I get this precious reminder to tell my sweetie how Ahhhsome she is to me.” I didn’t it tell him it wasn’t the only time during the year I blessed her. He wasn’t interested in relinquishing his burden.

I don’t submit to the market’s need to make money. I celebrate living in a country that sets aside days to honor my Lord’s birthday, His resurrection, the reality that the very gateway into God’s presence is gratitude… and then in the Winter, a specific celebration of LOVE. The cup is never half full or half empty, it’s always in OVERFLOW mode. Happy Valentines Day.

  2. Yup, good point. We should be practicing God’s agape love every day. Another thing, we see so many of the university students we work with depressed on Valentine’s Day simply because they don’t have a significant other. Commercialism has spoiled many things…Christmas, Easter, and even expression of love.
